Peat Price in Sweden (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average peat export price amounted to $112 per ton, increasing by 2.4% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated tangible growth from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.0% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, peat export price decreased by -13.8% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 29% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $130 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Norway ($159 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($97.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average peat import price stood at $196 per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 83%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($315 per ton), while the price for Estonia ($34 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Peat Exports in Sweden
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of peat, when their volume decreased by -13.4% to 294K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 340K tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, peat exports contracted to $30M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $30M, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
