In 2022, the average pharmaceutical preparation import price amounted to $174,279 per ton, falling by -3.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $213,825 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($1,472,420 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($2,591 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+26.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pharmaceutical Preparation Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022
The average pharmaceutical preparation export price stood at $85,467 per ton in 2022, rising by 2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a modest increase from 2013 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pharmaceutical preparation export price increased by +52.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $100,471 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($916,818 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($7,442 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+31.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pharmaceutical Preparation Imports in the United States
For the fourth consecutive year, the United States recorded growth in purchases abroad of pharmaceutical preparations, which increased by 13% to 609K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, pharmaceutical preparation imports rose significantly to $106.1B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
