Plantain Price in Ireland (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average plantain export price amounted to $1,310 per ton, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 15%. The export price peaked at $1,340 per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,375 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK amounted to $1,308 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+6.4%).
Plantain Price in Ireland (CIF) - 2023
The average plantain import price stood at $1,670 per ton in October 2023, with a decrease of -1.6% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a perceptible increase from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, plantain import price decreased by -16.8% against August 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 72% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,176 per ton. From May 2023 to October 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Colombia ($1,657 per ton) and Uganda ($1,594 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($1,486 per ton) and Ecuador ($1,504 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plantain Exports in Ireland
In 2022, shipments abroad of plantains decreased by -23.7% to 467 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 944 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plantain exports plummeted to $612K in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The smallest decline of -2.4% was in 2020.
