Plywood Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average plywood import price amounted to $748 per cubic meter, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($1,206 per cubic meter), while the price for Chile ($662 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plywood Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average plywood export price amounted to $537 per cubic meter, with a decrease of -13.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 12% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $645 per cubic meter. From July 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Cook Islands ($568 per cubic meter) and Australia ($513 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Tonga ($511 per cubic meter) and American Samoa ($511 per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plywood Imports in New Zealand
For the fourth year in a row, New Zealand recorded growth in purchases abroad of plywood, which increased by 11% to 153K cubic meters in 2022. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, plywood imports skyrocketed to $114M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Plywood Exports in New Zealand
For the third consecutive year, New Zealand recorded decline in shipments abroad of plywood, which decreased by -67.2% to 18K cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a precipitous contraction. The smallest decline of -21.3% was in 2020. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 119K cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plywood exports fell notably to $10M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a precipitous descent. The smallest decline of -27% was in 2020. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $80M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
