Pork Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average pork import price amounted to $3,671 per ton, leveling off at the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 14% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $3,881 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($4,683 per ton), while the price for Australia ($2,788 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pork Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023
The average pork export price stood at $5,140 per ton in September 2023, increasing by 7.4% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a tangible increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.9% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, pork export price increased by +55.0% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2023 when the average export price increased by 41% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $5,492 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Fiji ($5,655 per ton) and Kiribati ($5,026 per ton), while the average price for exports to Niue ($3,882 per ton) and Tonga ($3,938 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+44.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pork Imports in New Zealand
Pork imports into New Zealand declined rapidly to 47K tons in 2022, which is down by -15.4% against the previous year. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 56K tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, pork imports reduced remarkably to $149M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $190M, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
