Potato Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
The average potato import price stood at $446 per ton in August 2023, falling by -36.3% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 when the average import price increased by 20% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $700 per ton, and then dropped rapidly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($813 per ton), while the price for Egypt totaled $478 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Potato Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average potato export price amounted to $779 per ton, leveling off at the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 29% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $843 per ton. From February 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($1,751 per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt stood at $341 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Potato Imports in Italy
In 2022, imports of potatoes into Italy rose modestly to 648K tons, picking up by 3.7% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a slight contraction.
In value terms, potato imports expanded markedly to $218M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback.

In 2022, overseas shipments of potatoes were finally on the rise to reach 77K tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent.
In value terms, potato exports dropped modestly to $47M in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The smallest decline of -3.5% was in 2021.
