Price for Alkali and Rare Earth Metals in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average import price for alkali or alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, scandium and yttrium, mercury amounted to $3,287 per ton, growing by 4.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2021 an increase of 73% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $3,721 per ton in August 2021; however, from September 2021 to December 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Australia ($3,684 per ton), while the price for China totaled $337 per ton.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+1.1%).
Price for Alkali and Rare Earth Metals in Malaysia (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average export price for alkali or alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, scandium and yttrium, mercury amounted to $62,510 per ton, declining by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 337%. The export price peaked at $63,858 per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($74,039 per ton), while the average price for exports to Brunei Darussalam totaled $419 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+26.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Alkali and Rare Earth Metals in Malaysia
For the fourth consecutive year, Malaysia recorded growth in purchases abroad of alkali or alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, scandium and yttrium, mercury, which increased by 13% to 7K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, alkali and rare earth metals imports declined slightly to $72M in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 0.2%.

Exports of Alkali and Rare Earth Metals in Malaysia
In 2022, shipments abroad of alkali or alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, scandium and yttrium, mercury increased by 2.6% to 181 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback.
In value terms, alkali and rare earth metals exports reached $11M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 114%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
