Price for Anise, Badian, Fennel and Coriander in Italy (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $2,231 per ton, dropping by -8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a notable increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, anise, badian, fennel and coriander export price decreased by -8.2% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 19% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $2,430 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($11,918 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($1,124 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In July 2023, the average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $4,050 per ton, shrinking by -11.3% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a modest increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, anise, badian, fennel and coriander import price decreased by -35.9% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 92% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $6,362 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($16,038 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($2,256 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Anise, Badian, Fennel and Coriander in Italy

In 2022, shipments abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -4.7% to 18K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 11%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 18K tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports reached $31M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

For the fourth consecutive year, Italy recorded growth in purchases abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, which increased by 6.1% to 2.8K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports rose modestly to $11M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 32%.
