In 2022, the average import price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $569 per ton, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,117 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($1,227 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($288 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in Libya
In 2022, purchases abroad of apples, pears and quinces; freshes decreased by -19.1% to 53K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 65K tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, apples, pears and quinces; fresh imports shrank remarkably to $30M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 51%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $36M, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
