Price for Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021

The average import price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes stood at $1,129 per ton in December 2021, rising by 8.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,259 per ton in January 2021; however, from February 2021 to December 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,917 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($973 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes stood at $1,103 per ton in December 2021, picking up by 9% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2021 an increase of 27% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,303 per ton in February 2021; however, from March 2021 to December 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($3,663 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($628 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in Malaysia

In 2022, approx. 146K tons of apples, pears and quinces; freshes were imported into Malaysia; growing by 1.8% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 148K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apples, pears and quinces; fresh imports declined to $156M in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 4.8%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $160M, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports of Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in Malaysia

In 2022, overseas shipments of apples, pears and quinces; freshes decreased by -2.3% to 2.9K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year.

In value terms, apples, pears and quinces; fresh exports declined to $2.9M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20%.
