In June 2023, the average import price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $1,533 per ton, dropping by -8.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 63% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,819 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Chile ($2,167 per ton), while the price for Italy ($1,117 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+22.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $573 per ton, rising by 23% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apples, pears and quinces; fresh export price decreased by -4.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $601 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($757 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($170 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+12.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in Switzerland
In 2022, supplies from abroad of apples, pears and quinces; freshes decreased by -0.9% to 18K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 21K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, apples, pears and quinces; fresh imports dropped to $23M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $28M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
