Price for Buckwheat, Millet and Canary Seed; Other Cereals in Thailand (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average import price for buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses amounted to $566 per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($2,316 per ton), while the price for Lao People's Democratic Republic ($373 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In January 2024, the average export price for buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses amounted to $1,191 per ton, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 31% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,664 per ton in September 2023; however, from October 2023 to January 2024, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,658 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) totaled $913 per ton.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.5%).

In 2022, imports of buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses into Thailand skyrocketed to 17K tons, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -8.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 19K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses soared to $9.8M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses expanded modestly to $6.2M in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent.
