In 2022, the average import price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $3,367 per ton, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($6,313 per ton), while the price for Honduras ($1,633 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $1,296 per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,777 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the Dominican Republic ($1,565 per ton) and the United States ($1,441 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($1,085 per ton) and El Salvador ($1,121 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Honduras (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Candy, Sweets, and Nonchocolate Confectionery in Costa Rica
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery, when their volume increased by 25% to 12K tons. In general, imports, however, saw a deep downturn.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports soared to $40M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports of Candy, Sweets, and Nonchocolate Confectionery in Costa Rica
In 2022, overseas shipments of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery decreased by -13.3% to 18K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 27%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 21K tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports reduced slightly to $24M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +45.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 44%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $25M, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
