The average import price for cereal grains; worked (eg hulled, pearled, sliced or kibbled) of oatses stood at $413 per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $738 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($3,400 per ton), while the price for Sri Lanka ($384 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+13.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $2,033 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($2,188 per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($1,650 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

For the fourth year in a row, Kenya recorded growth in supplies from abroad of cereal grains; worked (eg hulled, pearled, sliced or kibbled) of oatses, which increased by 4.7% to 481 tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of cereal grains; worked (eg hulled, pearled, sliced or kibbled) of oatses stood at $199K in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
