In August 2023, the average import price for cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds amounted to $256 per ton, remaining constant against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 3.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $343 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Bulgaria ($280 per ton) and Serbia ($255 per ton), while the price for Russia ($230 per ton) and Ukraine ($252 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (-1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In August 2023, the average export price for cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds amounted to $414 per ton, shrinking by -38.7% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated notable growth from October 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3% over the last ten months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, export price for cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds decreased by -38.7% against July 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2023 an increase of 59% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $676 per ton in July 2023, and then fell significantly in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($835 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($278 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Cereals; Maize (Corn), Other than Seed in Greece

For the third consecutive year, Greece recorded decline in supplies from abroad of cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds, which decreased by -6.4% to 568K tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The smallest decline of -3.5% was in 2021.

In value terms, imports of cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds rose notably to $198M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 36%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
