The average import price for cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds stood at $282 per ton in August 2023, dropping by -2.7% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 an increase of 7.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $339 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from South Africa ($374 per ton) and Brazil ($317 per ton), while the price for Moldova ($261 per ton) and Ukraine ($272 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds stood at $841 per ton in August 2023, flattening at the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 an increase of 135% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $982 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Switzerland.

From October 2022 to August 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Belgium amounted to +9.1% per month.
