The average export price for cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes; of tobacco or of tobacco substituteses stood at $21 per thousand units in 2022, waning by -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $25 per thousand units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($32 per thousand units), while the average price for exports to Japan ($12 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lebanon (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes; of tobacco or of tobacco substituteses stood at $81.4 per thousand units in May 2024, with a decrease of -10.8% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a modest increase from May 2023 to May 2024: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2024 figures, import price for cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes; of tobacco or of tobacco substituteses decreased by -10.8% against April 2024 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 67% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $0.1 per unit. From July 2023 to May 2024, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2024, the country with the highest price was Cuba ($1.0 per unit), while the price for the Netherlands ($11.0 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2023 to May 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Cigars, Cheroots, Cigarillos and Cigarettes; of Tobacco or of Tobacco Substitutes in Switzerland
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes; of tobacco or of tobacco substituteses increased by 2.5% to 20B units in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The exports peaked at 23B units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes; of tobacco or of tobacco substituteses fell to $411M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of less than 0.1%. The exports peaked at $539M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes; of tobacco or of tobacco substituteses contracted slightly to $88M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at $90M in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
