In December 2023, the average export price for coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds amounted to $95.7 per ton, rising by 3.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 154% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $191 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($213 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($55.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $392 per ton in December 2023, surging by 110% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate strong growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($398 per ton), while the price for Swaziland totaled $96.0 per ton.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+51.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Exports of Coal; Anthracite, Whether or Not Pulverised, But Not Agglomerated in South Africa

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds increased by 32% to 1.7M tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, exports of coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds soared to $154M in 2022. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
