The average export price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $246 per ton in December 2023, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2023 when the average export price increased by 16% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $272 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In December 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($318 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($317 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($222 per ton) and the Netherlands ($232 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $158 per ton in 2022, increasing by 57% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 197%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $468 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($182 per ton), while the price for Colombia ($116 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
