Price for Coal; Bituminous, Whether or Not Pulverised, But Not Agglomerated in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average export price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds amounted to $246 per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 17% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $372 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($364 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($245 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In October 2023, the average import price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds amounted to $246 per ton, growing by 7.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 16% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $317 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($279 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($177 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Exports of Coal; Bituminous, Whether or Not Pulverised, But Not Agglomerated in the Netherlands

For the fourth consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded growth in overseas shipments of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds, which increased by 113% to 38M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 227%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds surged to $5.6B in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 266% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds, when their volume decreased by -3.6% to 20M tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 93%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 20M tons, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds contracted to $2.7B in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 228%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $3B, and then reduced in the following year.
