The average cocoa; paste, not defatted import price stood at $4,395 per ton in July 2023, picking up by 3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 9.3% m-o-m. The import price peaked in July 2023.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Malaysia ($4,980 per ton) and Cote d'Ivoire ($4,705 per ton), while the price for Ghana ($3,863 per ton) and Indonesia ($3,864 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cocoa; paste, not defatted export price amounted to $3,421 per ton, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight decline. The export price peaked at $4,656 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Singapore.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the Netherlands amounted to +2.7% per year.
Imports of Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Australia
For the fourth year in a row, Australia recorded growth in purchases abroad of cocoa; paste, not defatteds, which increased by 5.4% to 22K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted imports dropped modestly to $94M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $94M, leveling off in the following year.
