In June 2023, the average cocoa; paste, not defatted export price amounted to $4,571 per ton, rising by 4.5% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 an increase of 7.4% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in June 2023.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were France ($4,977 per ton) and Russia ($4,823 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($4,241 per ton) and Belgium ($4,312 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cocoa; paste, not defatted import price stood at $3,678 per ton in June 2023, increasing by 6.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 13% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,695 per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to June 2023.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Ghana ($4,051 per ton) and Cote d'Ivoire ($3,831 per ton), while the price for Germany ($2,920 per ton) and France ($3,483 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in the Netherlands
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of cocoa; paste, not defatteds, when their volume decreased by -12% to 215K tons. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 33%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 244K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted exports shrank to $779M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year.

In general, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 2.3%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 131K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted imports contracted significantly to $384M in 2022. Overall, imports saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 11%.
