Price for Cocoa; Paste; Whether or Not Defatted in China (CIF) - 2023
In December 2023, the average import price for cocoa; paste; whether or not defatteds amounted to $5,450 per ton, remaining stable against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a moderate expansion from December 2022 to December 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2023 figures, import price for cocoa; paste; whether or not defatteds decreased by -2.5% against October 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $5,588 per ton in October 2023; however, from November 2023 to December 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($7,150 per ton), while the price for Spain ($1,807 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for cocoa; paste; whether or not defatteds stood at $2,407 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 43% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $3,861 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($3,365 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($2,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Cocoa; Paste; Whether or Not Defatted in China
In 2022, the amount of cocoa; paste; whether or not defatteds imported into China declined to 23K tons, which is down by -2.7% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 24K tons, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, imports of cocoa; paste; whether or not defatteds stood at $100M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of cocoa; paste; whether or not defatteds soared to $4.1M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn.
