The average import price for cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted stood at $2,666 per ton in October 2023, declining by -14.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 15% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $3,103 per ton in September 2023, and then declined in the following month.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Cote d'Ivoire ($2,862 per ton) and Ghana ($2,862 per ton), while the price for Nigeria ($2,505 per ton) and Cameroon ($2,797 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average export price for cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted amounted to $2,356 per ton, waning by -29.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 81% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $3,760 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($3,547 per ton), while the average price for exports to China amounted to $568 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+55.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Cocoa; Paste, Wholly or Partly Defatted in Germany
In 2022, imports of cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted into Germany soared to 26K tons, rising by 15% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted skyrocketed to $63M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +81.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
