In September 2023, the average import price for copper plates, sheets and strips amounted to $11,390 per ton, shrinking by -2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 2.6% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $12,432 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($13,926 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($9,270 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In August 2023, the average export price for copper plates, sheets and strips amounted to $9,426 per ton, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 5.7% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $10,756 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($12,214 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($4,665 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Copper Plates, Sheets and Strip in China

In 2022, the amount of copper plates, sheets and strips imported into China reduced to 116K tons, which is down by -5.4% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 123K tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, copper plates, sheets and strip imports shrank markedly to $1.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +21.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.5B, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of copper plates, sheets and strips, when their volume decreased by -20.1% to 64K tons. Overall, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 81K tons, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, copper plates, sheets and strip exports fell dramatically to $629M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 119%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $864M, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
