The average export price for copper; refined and copper alloys, unwroughts stood at $6,344 per ton in 2022, surging by 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 51% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $7,566 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Vietnam ($6,513 per ton) and India ($6,494 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($5,976 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($6,403 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average import price for copper; refined and copper alloys, unwroughts amounted to $9,692 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight setback. The import price peaked at $10,924 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($28,549 per ton), while the price for Japan ($6,930 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Copper; Refined and Copper Alloys, Unwrought in Sri Lanka
In 2022, overseas shipments of copper; refined and copper alloys, unwroughts decreased by -11.2% to 1.4K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 22% against the previous year.
In value terms, exports of copper; refined and copper alloys, unwroughts dropped to $9.1M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +68.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $9.9M, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, imports of copper; refined and copper alloys, unwroughts contracted modestly to $599K in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced downturn.
