The average export price for copper; refined, unwrought, cathodes and sections of cathodeses stood at $9,114 per ton in 2022, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $9,573 per ton, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Malaysia ($9,698 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($9,522 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($8,544 per ton) and Thailand ($8,689 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In December 2023, the average import price for copper; refined, unwrought, cathodes and sections of cathodeses amounted to $7,676 per ton, waning by -4.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price faced a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2023 when the average import price increased by 0.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $26,929 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to December 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Zambia.
From August 2023 to December 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Zambia amounted to -1.3% per month.
Exports of Copper; Refined, Unwrought, Cathodes and Sections of Cathodes in Tanzania
For the fourth consecutive year, Tanzania recorded growth in overseas shipments of copper; refined, unwrought, cathodes and sections of cathodeses, which increased by 108% to 49K tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, exports of copper; refined, unwrought, cathodes and sections of cathodeses surged to $445M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 114%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
