The average export price for cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), put up for retail sale stood at $12,278 per ton in April 2024, dropping by -7.7% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2024 an increase of 12% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $13,402 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to April 2024, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In April 2024, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($19,800 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($10,994 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2023 to April 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), put up for retail sale amounted to $13,333 per ton, surging by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($36,735 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($7,397 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, shipments abroad of cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), put up for retail sale decreased by -11.3% to 333 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 376 tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, exports of cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), put up for retail sale contracted modestly to $3.7M in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $3.9M, and then shrank in the following year.
