Price for Ferrous Waste and Scrap; of Stainless Steel in Malaysia (FOB) - 2024

In January 2024, the average export price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels amounted to $593 per ton, with a decrease of -32.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 94% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,339 per ton in October 2023; however, from November 2023 to January 2024, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,201 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($530 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels stood at $1,040 per ton in 2022, which is down by -31.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels increased by +17.7% against 2020 indices.
