In 2022, the average export price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels amounted to $545 per ton, rising by 9.9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a strong expansion from 2015 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last seven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels increased by +57.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($931 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($200 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+30.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels stood at $2,253 per ton in 2022, increasing by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 51%. The import price peaked at $4,061 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($2,411 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($2,227 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cyprus (+27.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Exports of Ferrous Waste and Scrap; of Stainless Steel in Ukraine

In 2022, overseas shipments of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels decreased by -36.4% to 6.6K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 102%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 10K tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, exports of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels shrank significantly to $3.6M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $5.1M, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels imported into Ukraine declined rapidly to 1.5K tons, with a decrease of -92.8% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a precipitous decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 21K tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, imports of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels shrank dramatically to $3.4M in 2022. In general, imports faced a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 95%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $43M, and then declined sharply in the following year.
