The average import price for fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce stood at $642 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,272 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($2,163 per ton), while the price for Australia amounted to $172 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($1,000 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain ($111 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports of Fresh or Chilled Cabbage Lettuce in Sri Lanka

In 2022, purchases abroad of fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce decreased by -10.9% to 27 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 351%. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +66.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce exports surged to $460 in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
