In November 2023, the average import price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $8,366 per ton, surging by 2% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2023 when the average import price increased by 24% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in November 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($16,516 per ton), while the price for Portugal ($2,428 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $8,572 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 42%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $12,517 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($14,586 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($5,326 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Azerbaijan (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses, when their volume decreased by -10.2% to 722 tons. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 9.2% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 803 tons, and then shrank in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $6.2M, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
