In 2022, the average import price for iron and non-alloy steel in ingots amounted to $2,228 per ton, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for iron and non-alloy steel in ingots increased by +73.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($6,244 per ton), while the price for China ($752 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($12,911 per ton), while the average price for exports to Timor-Leste ($1,111 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, overseas purchases of iron and non-alloy steel in ingots were finally on the rise to reach 4.4K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction.

In 2022, shipments abroad of iron and non-alloy steel in ingots decreased by -27.4% to 38 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +19.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 52 tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, exports of iron and non-alloy steel in ingots contracted dramatically to $212K in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $277K, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
