Price for Liquefied Ethylene, Propylene, Butylene and Butadiene in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023

In October 2023, the average export price for liquefied ethylene, propylene, butylene and butadienes amounted to $917 per ton, rising by 30% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,125 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium stood at $880 per ton.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Morocco (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for liquefied ethylene, propylene, butylene and butadienes amounted to $1,137 per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,152 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($1,179 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($602 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Liquefied Ethylene, Propylene, Butylene and Butadiene in the Netherlands

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of liquefied ethylene, propylene, butylene and butadienes decreased by -3.5% to 181K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year.

In value terms, exports of liquefied ethylene, propylene, butylene and butadienes skyrocketed to $179M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Over the period under review, imports faced a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12%.
