Price for Meat of Bovine Animals; Fresh or Chilled in South Africa (FOB) - 2024

The average export price for meat of bovine animals; fresh or chilled stood at $5,044 per ton in January 2024, rising by 13% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 an increase of 24% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $7,119 per ton. From September 2023 to January 2024, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($6,769 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($1,971 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average import price for meat of bovine animals; fresh or chilled amounted to $2,885 per ton, surging by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 10% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $4,014 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($2,937 per ton), while the price for Botswana totaled $2,704 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-2.2%).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 17K tons. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
