The average export price for melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes stood at $543 per ton in June 2023, shrinking by -52.7% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 119% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1,613 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were the UK ($555 per ton) and Spain ($548 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($504 per ton) and Belgium ($516 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes amounted to $695 per ton, reducing by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $772 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($711 per ton), while the price for Spain ($450 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth consecutive year, Morocco recorded growth in shipments abroad of melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes, which increased by 11% to 342K tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, exports of melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes contracted to $269M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 41%.

As a result, imports attained the peak of 279 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
