Price for Molybdenum; Waste and Scrap in China (FOB) - 2023

The average molybdenum; waste and scrap export price stood at $62,421 per ton in September 2023, growing by 23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a prominent increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, molybdenum; waste and scrap export price increased by +29.9% against July 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 26% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $67,982 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($71,250 per ton) and Japan ($66,966 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($55,588 per ton) and the UK ($65,029 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+19.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average molybdenum; waste and scrap import price stood at $19,152 per ton in 2022, waning by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 97% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $27,740 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($145,133 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($8,643 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Overall, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last three years.
