The average export price for newspapers, journals and periodicals, appearing at least four times a week stood at $4,132 per ton in March 2024, dropping by -7.8% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2024 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $4,481 per ton, and then reduced in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In March 2024, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($8,717 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($664 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2023 to March 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 60%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,073 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($3,809 per ton), while the price for China ($978 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+14.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
