The average import price for nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires stood at $37,896 per ton in July 2023, which is down by -37.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 347% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $60,272 per ton in June 2023, and then reduced dramatically in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($109K per ton), while the price for South Korea ($2,701 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+91.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires stood at $10,094 per ton in 2022, falling by -32.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 150%. The export price peaked at $37,973 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($13,231 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($2,458 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. 92 tons of nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires were imported into South Africa; declining by -43.1% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 143%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 162 tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
