Price for Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in Switzerland (CIF) - 2022
The average import price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils stood at $47,766 per ton in 2022, growing by 6.2% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 89%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $64,155 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($116,820 per ton), while the price for France ($33,428 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In January 2024, the average export price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils amounted to $77,158 per ton, jumping by 34% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 67% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $103K per ton. From July 2023 to January 2024, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was France ($143K per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($22,747 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in Switzerland
For the fourth consecutive year, Switzerland recorded growth in purchases abroad of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils, which increased by 31% to 627 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, imports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils soared to $30M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas shipments of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils decreased by -0.6% to 219 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 4.9% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 226 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, exports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils expanded sharply to $14M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
