In January 2024, the average import price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils amounted to $31,714 per ton, waning by -20.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 17% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $43,624 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to January 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was the United States ($73,190 per ton), while the price for China ($21,901 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+18.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils amounted to $51,655 per ton, increasing by 107% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $74,011 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($66,711 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($10,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+20.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in Thailand
For the fourth year in a row, Thailand recorded growth in overseas purchases of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils, which increased by 2.3% to 563 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, imports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils stood at $19M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils from Thailand fell dramatically to 944 kg in 2022, reducing by -77.2% against the previous year. Overall, exports faced a significant decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 452%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4.1 tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, exports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils contracted rapidly to $49K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 477%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $103K, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
