The average nickel; unwrought, not alloyed import price stood at $26,499 per ton in 2022, jumping by 31% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, nickel; unwrought, not alloyed import price increased by +107.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 32%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($36,442 per ton), while the price for China ($5,903 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+23.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of nickel; unwrought, not alloyeds decreased by -31.7% to 4.9 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports faced a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 35%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 17 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nickel; unwrought, not alloyed imports declined to $131K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $301K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
