Price for Nickel; Wire, Not Alloyed in Germany (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average nickel; wire, not alloyed import price amounted to $31,616 per ton, which is down by -14.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $37,392 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($52,173 per ton), while the price for China ($3,231 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Nickel; Wire, Not Alloyed in Germany (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average nickel; wire, not alloyed export price amounted to $41,645 per ton, jumping by 25% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, nickel; wire, not alloyed export price increased by +35.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 29% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($56,665 per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($26,810 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Nickel; Wire, Not Alloyed in Germany
In 2022, purchases abroad of nickel; wire, not alloyeds decreased by -13.1% to 614 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 87%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 707 tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, nickel; wire, not alloyed imports skyrocketed to $19M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 124%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, nickel; wire, not alloyed exports from Germany declined to 350 tons, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +46.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 352 tons, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, nickel; wire, not alloyed exports soared to $15M in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 68%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
