In February 2022, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $557 per ton, which is down by -7.3% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated modest growth from February 2021 to February 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2022 figures, import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -4.7% against November 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2021 an increase of 38% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $866 per ton. From September 2021 to February 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2022, the country with the highest price was China ($1,453 per ton), while the price for Peru amounted to $251 per ton.

From February 2021 to February 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.6%).

In 2022, the average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $4,516 per ton, picking up by 1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $5,825 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($7,355 per ton), while the average price for exports to Curacao ($677 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -1.6% to 76K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds reached $41M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 11%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $42M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
