The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $797 per ton in November 2023, jumping by 206% against the previous month. Overall, the export price posted a strong expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In November 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Malaysia ($854 per ton) and Nepal ($806 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($788 per ton) and Indonesia ($792 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+33.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $510 per ton in November 2023, falling by -45% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 158% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,057 per ton. From April 2023 to November 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($517 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($291 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+26.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds increased by 49% to 2.2M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds soared to $533M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +51.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
