In 2022, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $355 per ton, dropping by -18.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average import price increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $481 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($872 per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($255 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $3,053 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 32% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds increased by +195.1% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($5,274 per ton), while the average price for exports to Maldives ($1,364 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+87.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. 312K tons of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds were imported into Sri Lanka; remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 6.3%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds declined dramatically to $111M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 3.9% against the previous year.
