In December 2023, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $2,213 per ton, approximately reflecting the previous month. Overall, import price indicated prominent growth from December 2022 to December 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +6.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2023 figures, import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -2.3% against September 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 68% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $2,266 per ton in September 2023; however, from October 2023 to December 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($4,049 per ton), while the price for Canada ($1,352 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In December 2023, the average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $974 per ton, with an increase of 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight descent. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,189 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,695 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($798 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

For the fourth consecutive year, the United States recorded growth in supplies from abroad of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds, which increased by 5.1% to 823K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds expanded significantly to $832M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
