The average import price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint stood at $1,355 per ton in 2022, surging by 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($2,345 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($867 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint stood at $1,023 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,322 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($1,868 per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($313 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Liberia (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in Nigeria
In 2022, supplies from abroad of paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint decreased by -15.6% to 493K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 644K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint imports rose sharply to $668M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint exports reduced to $2.2M in 2022. Overall, exports faced a deep downturn. The smallest decline of -8.3% was in 2020.
