The average export price for pearls; articles of natural or cultured pearlses stood at $48,364 per ton in 2022, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 563%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $219,760 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($49,200 per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda amounted to $40,000 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+32.7%).

The import price peaked at $29,747 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($6,308 per ton), while the price for the UK ($1,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

For the third consecutive year, Uganda recorded decline in shipments abroad of pearls; articles of natural or cultured pearlses, which decreased by -47.6% to 11 kg in 2022. Overall, exports saw a dramatic decrease. The smallest decline of -40% was in 2021.
