In October 2023, the average import price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds amounted to $158 per ton, reducing by -34.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 62% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $349 per ton. From July 2023 to October 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($174 per ton), while the price for Serbia ($150 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds stood at $210 per ton in 2022, which is down by -80.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 641%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,981 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($8,674 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kosovo ($127 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+2,544.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 11K tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, imports of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds rose significantly to $2.3M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
